Vince Cable MP to speak at College apprenticeship event

With an increasing number of Midlands’ employers discovering the value and benefit of apprenticeships, Solihull College and Solihull Chamber of Commerce have joined forces for an Apprenticeship Event on 15 May at the College’s Blossomfield Campus.
Along with attracting key local employers such a Jaguar Land Rover and Virgin Media, the College is pleased to announce that Rt Hon Dr Vince Cable MP, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills will be speaking.
In addition to Jaguar Land Rover and Virgin Media, businesses including Aldi, Arup, Prime Chartered Accountants, Gro-Organic C.I.C and Birmingham Airport will be exhibiting. High profile guest speakers will include Alan Volkaerts from Jaguar Land Rover, Chris Starling from Virgin Media, Steve Brittan from BSA Machine Tools and Jeff Walker from FLR Group.
Joan Smith from Solihull Chamber of Commerce comments: “This event will provide local businesses with a great opportunity to showcase their potential to school leavers- to show them why apprenticeships hold so much value. We are really pleased to be hosting so many big business names in the Midlands and hope to attract many more before 15 May”?.
Exhibitors will have the opportunity to talk and network with other businesses and listen to keynote speakers, there will also be a chance to speak with local school children who are being invited in. From 3pm the local business community are invited to attend to meet the exhibitors and their apprentices to discuss and understand the benefits of apprenticeship scheme; local students will be invited from 5pm to meet businesses to look at future opportunities.
Shaun Hindle, Senior Director for Employment and Skills at Solihull College comments: “Apprenticeships are becoming a progressively popular route for young people who are unsure about entering college or university full time. We currently place around 1500 students a year in programmes and the number is continuing to grow in 2014. Opportunities for progression within the apprenticeship framework now go up to degree level in certain industries”.
The Solihull College and Solihull Chamber of Commerce Apprenticeship Event is taking place on Thursday 15 May at the College’s Blossomfield Road Campus between 3pm-7pm.
