Solihull students shine at Graduation

1st November 2019

Graduates are celebrating the start of the next chapter of their working lives following the annual Solihull College & University Centre Graduation Ceremony.

The ceremony took place on Thursday 24th October at The National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull. Students celebrated the end of their higher education journey in style alongside approximately 800 guests made up of family, friends, fellow graduates, governors and employer partners.

Guest speaker David Hughes, Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges congratulated graduates on their outstanding achievements and special awards were presented to outstanding students – including awards from the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the West Midlands and Mayor of Solihull.

Student speaker Jemma Kinzett received a first-class degree in Creative Film Production. She also picked up the ‘Mayor’s Award’ for the improvement shown during her time on the course. Reflecting on her time at Solihull College & University Centre, she commented: “Looking back at my time at university, I had some of the best times of my life so far.”

College Principal John Callaghan brought the evening to a close with an analogy about inspiring others. “Think of yourself as a candle and think of just how many others you can light with your flame.”

Sue McGregor, Dean of Higher Education comments: “We offer students the opportunity to earn a top degree locally, without the extra accommodation costs associated with moving away to university. The smaller class sizes and extra support also appeal to many students. Many of our courses are offered either full or part time, allowing students to fit their studies around work or family life. It has been fantastic to see so many families here celebrating this evening.”

The College’s University Level Open Events will be taking place at both Blossomfield and Woodlands Campus on Saturday 16th November, 10am-2pm. Visitors are advised to check the College website for more details as some subjects are specific to either campus.
