Robots bring learning to life for SEND students

1st April 2025

Foundation Learning students from Solihull College & University Centre have been programming state-of-the-art ‘Sphero-Bolts’ to learn more about maths and coding.

The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) education resource kit was loaned to the College thanks to the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Institute of Technology (GBSIoT).

Learning with Robots for SEND students

Foundation lecturer, Craig Mcauley, says the kit always evokes a positive reaction from the students. He comments: “Using Sphero robots in our sessions offers students with Special Educational Needs & Disabilities (SEND) a compelling and competitive way to engage with coding and maths. By programming the robots to hit targets, students not only gain points but also crucial skills. This activity challenges them to follow detailed instructions and work effectively in teams, enhancing their problem-solving abilities.

Criag continues: “The task is particularly enriching as it embeds practical math skills, requiring them to calculate angles, speed, and timing adjustments to perfect their code. It’s a fantastic way to make learning interactive and fun, while deeply integrating educational concepts.”
