Solihull College & University Centre have partnered with Solihull’s Ramada hotel to offer young people the chance to complete their apprenticeships.
Students Kenan Butler and Brandon Phillips have been working at the Ramada hotel for the past 6 months as chefs and are now halfway through their apprenticeships. Before starting the apprenticeship both Kenan and Brandon had tried different courses with Brandon even beginning an apprenticeship in accounting, yet they both felt they were yet to find a career which they really enjoyed.
Both Kenan and Brandon have a passion for cooking and wanted to make a career from it; Brandon commented: “I did a GCSE in Food Preparation and Nutrition at school and really enjoyed it so I had some experience already.”
The apprentices began their chef apprenticeship through Solihull College at the Ramada hotel which they are both thoroughly enjoying and have already gained experience working in a busy kitchen environment with some evenings preparing for over 300 covers. As well as gaining the skills needed for the industry both Kenan and Brendon are gaining recognisable qualifications and being paid for their time at work. Both students are receiving great support from Solihull College in completing their apprenticeships as well as being able to learn from head chef at Ramada, Andrew Findon who says “It’s nice to have them here as we are so busy and extra hands are always helpful. They are both learning well and quickly.”
With just under 6 months of their apprenticeships left Kenan and Brandon are starting to look to their future. Kenan comments “I want to carry on working in the industry and one day hope to own my own business.”
Both Kenan and Brandon said they would recommend the apprenticeship to other students as it is a great way to learn, earn and gain that invaluable experience.
Solihull College & University Centre is now working with the Ramada hotel to offer more apprenticeships, including apprenticeships in reception staff, front of house and housekeeping.
