Recently many of us may have seen the news that the student maintenance grant for those in higher education will be no more. For many the loss of the grant this autumn means they will be unable to move away from home to continue with their higher education studies and for some they may even decide to go into employment rather than continue with their studies.
Institutions such as Solihull College & University Centre make it possible for to students to remain within their local area and still gain a high-quality education without the need for such grants. The College is partnered with Universities such as Birmingham City University, Newman University, The University of Warwick and Oxford Brookes University to offer a variety of courses including HNDs, HNCs, Foundation Degrees, Top-Up Degrees and Bachelor’s Degrees.
A recent survey which formed part of the Sodexo University Lifestyle Survey 2016, shows that with the decision to scrap the maintenance grant in mind, many young people may have either choose a different institution than originally planned, delay their studies to save to be able to afford to go to university or even not go to university at all if the grant was not available to them when they started their degree. Currently there are 500,000 students nationally who receive the maintenance grant of up to £3,387 and therefore many students will be forced to reconsider their options now the extra monetary support is unavailable.
Studying at Solihull College & University Centre allows you to stay at home and continue with other commitments such as family life and current employment whilst gaining your higher education qualification. Therefore if students stayed within the local area to study at the only university centre in Solihull; Solihull College & University Centre, there would not be such a need for the maintenance grant as students could carry on living at home and continue working within their current jobs whilst they study towards their degree.
