Saman Bentara, originally from France, moved to the UK at the age of three. Influenced by his father’s passion for photography and videography, Saman’s interest in media began at a young age. “When I was younger, I wanted to become a police officer, but by the time I reached 10 or 11, my passion for editing had taken over.” Saman recalls. Starting with basic editing software, he honed his skills over the years, eventually mastering industry-standard equipment during his time at the College.
Juan Pablo Germano, 20, hails from São Paulo, Brazil, and moved to Birmingham six years ago. Initially choosing media by accident at GCSE level, Juan found his passion ignited by an inspiring schoolteacher: “It wasn’t so much the media itself, but Mr Riley’s influence that made me fall in love with it.” Juan explains. His journey continued at the College, where his lecturers provided further inspiration and guidance.
A Thousand Times More, an award-winning film by Saman Bentara and Juan Pablo Germano, captured the attention of audiences and judges alike.
The duo’s award-winning film, A Thousand Times More, was created during their Level 3 studies at the College in 2023. The film explores the theme of memories and their impact, using a metaphor of memories as pieces of paper that the protagonist tries to bury. The project, which started as an entry for the IMA Festival, was completed in just one month and involved two days of shooting and a week of editing. The film’s success at the festival was a surprise to both filmmakers, who were thrilled and honoured by the recognition.
Creative Media Technician, Callum O’Connor, who witnessed the duo’s award-winning moment firsthand and has been a steadfast supporter throughout their College journey, shares his thoughts: “This incredible achievement by Saman and Juan showcases their remarkable talent and dedication. Their film, created during their time with us, is a testament to their hard work and creativity.”
From the hard work and dedication behind the scenes to the thrill of winning an award, Juan and Saman’s journey showcases their passion for storytelling.
Saman and Juan’s collaboration exemplifies the synergy between technical prowess and creative storytelling. Saman, with his deep knowledge of editing and technology, complemented Juan’s creative vision and narrative skills. Their combined efforts have not only resulted in a successful film but have also laid the foundation for their future aspirations.
Both Saman and Juan are set to continue their journey in filmmaking at Coventry University, starting their Film Production BA this September. Their experiences at the College have equipped them with the skills and confidence to pursue professional careers in the film industry. Saman is currently freelancing as a videographer and editor, while Juan is focused on expanding his knowledge and saving up for university.
