Solihull College & University Centre is proud to announce that Lecturer Kerry Scattergood, the institution’s FE Research Lead and an Adult Literacy Specialist, has been appointed as the Chair of The Research College Group (RCG).
The RCG, a collaborative network comprising nine pioneering colleges, was founded to champion practitioner research within the Further Education sector. The College, a founding member, has been instrumental in this initiative since its inception in September 2020. Kerry, one of the original steering committee members, has played a crucial role in shaping the group’s vision and activities.
Kerry’s leadership is marked by her dedication to ensuring the sustainability of RCG and her firm commitment to elevating the value of practitioner research. As she steps into the role of Chair, Kerry’s ambition is to continue fostering a culture where practitioner research is visible, celebrated, and impactful across the sector and beyond.
Reflecting on her new role, Kerry Scattergood states: “I am honoured to take on this position and continue the vital work of promoting practitioner research. Our collective efforts have shown that when educators engage in research, it not only enhances their practice but also enriches the learning experience for students. I am excited to lead the RCG in this next chapter and to support colleagues in shining a light on their innovative research.”
The College has been at the forefront of research initiatives, launching a research group and the SHEAR journal to inspire and support practitioner research among its staff. In 2019, the College hosted its first FE research event, #FEResearchmeet, encouraging colleagues to explore and improve their practice through research. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the College successfully transitioned this event online, further amplifying its impact and reach.
In addition to these efforts, the College launched a leadership programme aimed at developing future leaders who are equipped to implement research-based improvements in practice. The programme underscores the College’s commitment to nurturing expertise and empowering colleagues across various teams.
The RCG’s mission aligns seamlessly with the values of the College – to promote the development and use of practitioner research within the post-16 education and training sector. The group’s vision is to inform and enhance practice, develop research capacity, and foster collaboration across its member organisations. With Kerry Scattergood at the helm, RCG is poised to continue making significant strides in these areas.
