Solihull College & University Centre recently hosted its first ever Iftar Party bringing together staff to celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds that make up the College community.
Iftar is the evening meal that Muslims eat to break their daily fast during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. It symbolises the end of the day’s fasting and is a significant moment for families and communities to come together.
The Iftar Party, organised by the College’s Marketing & PR Officer and BAME Staff Network Lead, Faizah Azeem, and Student EDI & Enrichment Manager, Grace Wynne Willson, provided an opportunity for staff to learn about the significance of Ramadan and the Iftar meal. Staff enjoyed a delicious spread of traditional dishes provided by the College’s Catering team. The event was not only a celebration of diversity but also a reflection of the College’s inclusive direction.
Faizah commented: “It was a real team effort, with support from our Enrichment, Security, Facilities, and Catering teams. It was a heartwarming evening of shared food, culture, and appreciation for one another. Let’s carry this spirit forward, embracing diversity and showing gratitude for the togetherness that defines us.”
Last year, Faizah delivered Ramadan training to the College’s leadership team, emphasising the importance of understanding and accommodating the needs of staff and students observing Ramadan. Building on this, the training was expanded this year to include wider staff during the College’s development day. In addition, Faizah also created a comprehensive booklet of resources. This resource guide provides practical information and guidance on how staff can effectively support both their students and colleagues who are observing Ramadan, ensuring an inclusive and supportive environment for all during the holy month.

The joy and camaraderie of the event was captured in a video which garnered a lot of positive reactions on social media. The video showcased the vibrant atmosphere, the delicious food, and the sense of unity and togetherness that characterised the evening.
Grace Wynne Willson added: “We are thrilled with the positive response to our inaugural Iftar Party. It was a wonderful opportunity to bring staff together to celebrate diversity and unity, and we look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.”
The College remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and celebrated. The success of the Iftar Party underscores the College’s dedication to creating a welcoming and supportive community for all.
We hope staff and students enjoy the upcoming festivities of Eid and Vaisakhi with family and friends.
