Earlier this month, Solihull College’s Level 1 Hospitality students visited London to take a tour inside the 5* Shangri-La hotel, occupying the 34th-52nd floor of the iconic Shard building.
As part of their course, students have been examining the different standards within hotels ranging from 1-5*, with the trip to the Shangri-La offering an insight into the type of hospitality customary at the luxury end of the industry. Students were given a guided tour of the suites, infinity pool, gym facilities and restaurant, offering a unique insight into the workings of the hotel.
Few of the students had been to London before and none had ever been inside a 5* hotel, so it was a new experience for all.
Terry Moore, tutor on the course, arranged the visit via contacts made working at the Shangri-La in Kuala Lumpur. He comments “Students come away with an understanding of the diversity of hospitality. They realise that with suitable training, the number of roles available in the industry is endless”.
After visiting the hotel, students also experienced Borough Market where they tried samples of food. It allowed them to visualise some of the food seen on menus at prestigious venues across the world. They even bumped into Paul Hollywood filming for his latest TV show.
