A former Beauty Therapy student from Solihull College & University Centre has taken her career to another level by starting her own training academy.
Laura Johnston attended the College from 2009 after struggling with school, and her teachers suggested a vocational course would be the best route for her to achieve her potential.
Laura completed her Level 1 at the Woodlands Campus before heading to Blossomfield to complete her Level 2 and 3. She comments: “My lecturer from Level 1 was so encouraging and welcomed me back for my Level 2 and 3. I was treated as a grown up and I really knuckled down and worked hard. Academia wasn’t my strong point and I wanted to build a career around the beauty industry.”
After graduating and working for a number of large, well known beauty brands, including YSL, Clarins and Tom Ford, Laura decided to take the plunge and set up on her own offering beauty treatments. “It was so scary – people would tell me I was mad to leave a great full-time job to set up on my own, but I’d always wanted to be my own boss, so I went for it!”
She now has her own beauty lash business and trains students wanting to get into the industry. “I want to give something back. My tutors were looking out for me at college and always encouraged me to do my best – without them I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing today.”
