17th March 2025

A former Early Years Degree student from Solihull College & University Centre has taken the step into nursery management thanks to the knowledge and skills gained on her course.

Jess Dolan started as an adult learner on a Level 3 Early Years course before progressing onto the College’s university level courses in collaboration with Oxford Brookes University.

Listen to Jess Dolan talk about how her Early Years Degree at Solihull College & University Centre helped her progress into a management role at Solihull Day Care

It was her dedication and passion for child development that led her to continue her studies, ultimately completing her Level 6 Degree in Early Years – a qualification that set her up for a successful and rewarding future.

Now the Nursery Manager at Solihull Day Care, Jess credits her time at the College as pivotal in shaping her career. She comments: “Returning to education as an adult was daunting at first, but the support from the tutors and the structure of the course made it so accessible. The knowledge and skills I gained during my degree gave me the confidence to pursue new opportunities and really develop as a professional in the early years sector.”

Jess’s studies not only provided her with theoretical understanding but also hands-on experience, allowing her to apply her learning in real-world settings. After completing her degree, she worked both in the UK and abroad, gaining a wealth of experience before returning to the UK where she subsequently took on a leadership role.

When the opportunity arose to apply for the Nursery Manager position at Solihull Day Care, Jess’s qualifications gave her a competitive edge: “Having a degree really set me apart during the application process. It wasn’t just about the qualification itself, it was the depth of understanding, leadership skills, and critical thinking that the course equipped me with. It meant I was ready to step into the role with confidence and lead a team effectively.”

Jess is passionate about supporting the next generation of Education & Childcare professionals, and her team at Solihull Day Care reflects this. She now employs a Level 3 apprentice and a T-Level student from the College, providing them with the same opportunities that helped launch her own career. In fact, many of her management team are alumni of the College, including her Assistant Manager, who completed an Early Years apprenticeship at the College.

Now in a leadership role, Jess supports the next generation of early years professionals through apprenticeships and training

“It’s really rewarding to now be in a position where I can give back and support others on their journey. I know firsthand how valuable apprenticeships and qualifications are in this field, and I want to help others grow just as I did.”

Jess’s former tutor, Susan Homer, is incredibly proud of her achievements: “Jess was always a dedicated and hardworking student, and it’s fantastic to see how she has flourished in her career. Her story is a perfect example of how lifelong learning and ambition can lead to incredible opportunities. She’s not only excelled in her own right but is now shaping the future of early years education by mentoring and developing new talent in the sector.”

For those considering a career in Education & Childcare, Jess’s advice is simple: “If you’re thinking about studying, go for it. The experience, knowledge, and confidence you gain are invaluable, and the opportunities it opens are endless.”
