Ten Solihull College & University Centre Graphic Design students have excelled at a recent international competition.
The Starpack awards recognises innovative design in packaging and technology with submissions being received from across the world. Briefs are supplied from a number of companies and entrants are required to research, design and create a mock-up of their final design for the competition.
Winners are then chosen by a combination of industry professionals and brand sponsors. All ten of the students who entered are studying towards their Higher National Diploma (HND) in Graphic Design. They were able to put their skills and knowledge learnt whilst at the College into practice to create their designs.
The competition offers students a perfect opportunity to experience what the packaging industry is like and gives them an idea of what would be required of them if they were to seek employment within the industry.
This is the 6th year that students from Solihull College & University Centre have entered the Starpack awards and 2016 has been the most successful year to date with students achieving 3 gold awards, 1 silver, 1 bronze, 4 commended prizes and one student even achieving an overall sponsor prize from one of the sponsored employers.
Neil Duffy, tutor on the HND Graphic Design course, commented “This is an excellent achievement by all students concerned. It gives them a fantastic opportunity for industrial contacts and progression into the packaging and graphic design industry.”
The students recently attended an official awards ceremony in London where they received prizes for their outstanding work in the competition and met the industry experts who were amongst the judging panel. Along with the prizes, students will be able to add the recognition to their portfolios which will inevitably add to their career prospects within the industry.
Solihull College & University Centre gives the HND Graphic Design students the opportunity to enter such competitions throughout their studies to give them a wide range of experience within the graphic design industry and in turn furthers their knowledge and experience within the sector.
The HND Graphic Design qualification is studied over 2 academic years and gives students the chance to work towards a university level qualification. Upon completion of the HND students can progress at Solihull College & University Centre to complete their top-up degree in Graphic Design to obtain a full-degree qualification.
