Darren Hogg decided to pursue a career change and looked to make his mark in HR. Darren soon realised that in order to achieve this he would need to study towards a recognised qualification to support his experiences at work and to build the foundations for his successful career.
Darren, who currently works as a HR Advisor for a local charity, enrolled on to the part-time CIPD course at Solihull College & University Centre whilst working full time. Darren took particular interest in the business issues and the context of HR and employment law modules of the course and quickly improved upon his knowledge and skills throughout his yearlong course.
He commented: “The course helped me to develop the skills and experience necessary to build a successful career in HR.”
He continued “The support I received from my tutor was second to none. She was extremely knowledgeable and supportive and always made time to provide any support which I needed to complete my assessments.”
It was with thanks to Darren’s tutor Nicky Small that he put himself forward for the CIPD 2016 awards. Darren heard about the awards directly from CIPD and along with his class peers was encouraged by Nicky to apply.
Upon completion of his application Darren received the fantastic news that he had been shortlisted for the ‘Michael Kelly Outstanding Student of the Year’ category.
Darren commented: “I am extremely proud and overwhelmed to have been shortlisted for the award, especially as I am still in the early stages of my HR career. Being shortlisted is excellent recognition that I have been able to use my skills and experience for the benefit of an organisation.”
Darren has done extremely well to be shortlisted for the award as it is open to all foundation and intermediate students which equates to approximately 12,000 students.
The next stage of the competition sees Darren present his nomination to a panel of judges in London and the winners are to be announced at an awards dinner which is set to be held in September.
Darren feels that his course has given him the skills and knowledge he needs to progress within his HR career and he would recommend the CIPD course to anyone who is looking to gain a career with the field. Darren commented “My experience at Solihull College & University Centre has exceeded my expectations. Should I decide to complete any further HR studies, I will definitely do this at Solihull College & University Centre.”
