Solihull College & University Centre Retail Fashion student Zoe Michael has entered the Visual Merchandising competition for World Skills and has been selected to go through to the next stage.
Zoe, who is currently studying towards her retail fashion qualification, has received the brief outline for the competition which stipulates competitors must use the theme of geometric shapes and is busy working hard researching ideas. Zoe will be tasked with designing a number of visual merchandising displays and implementing her designs using her creativity.
Zoe has already been practicing her skills through her work experience whilst on her course at the College. Zoe has worked with local retailer Jurnie on a number of projects over the academic year. Zoe comments “Working with Jurnie has helped me to trial ideas to see what will and won’t work within a window display.”
Zoe’s tutor at Solihull College & University Centre, Sophie Bridge commented “When Zoe started the year her window creations were often cluttered, however, she has since learnt to take the window back to basics and build her ideas gradually; she has learnt the ability and importance of planning.”
The first round of the competition will be held at London College of Fashion on 21st June and Zoe is hoping to progress within the competition to gain her place at the final heat which is hosted at the NEC in Birmingham later in the year.
Zoe comments “I am pleased I have managed to get through to the next stage. I’m really looking forward to the competition but I’m apprehensive at the same time about what to expect.”
The competition will allow Zoe to gain even more experience within the visual merchandising industry, which she will be able to add to her portfolio of work to aid in finding employment upon completing her qualification.
