College opens innovative AI Lab

22nd January 2025

A high-spec Artificial Intelligence (AI) Lab has opened its doors at Solihull College & University Centre’s Blossomfield Campus thanks to funding from the Local Skills Improvement Fund (LSIF).

The LSIF awarded the College nearly £147,000 to develop and create a cutting-edge lab future-proofed for the ever-changing world of technology. It’s part of a wider project looking to reduce skills gaps in industries across the West Midlands, and it will also be available for local employers to utilise.

The AI lab

The lab features high-functioning computers, robots and a robotic arm, as well as a 3D printer which will allow Computing & Emerging Technologies students to design, print and build their own robots.

Computing lecturer, Neil Gavin, says the premise of AI is simple: “AI is all about computers which gather information, react to the environment and use that data creatively and autonomously. It’s a concept which can be linked to any part of our computing courses and so much more.”

The robots can be programmed to make autonomous decisions, allowing students to gain real world handson experience with this technology. Plans are in place to open the lab for AI bootcamps and local businesses to train their staff.

The College is proud to be lead partner of the Greater Birmingham & Solihull Institute of Technology (GBSIoT). IoTs focus on the specific technical skills needs required in their area. They provide employers with a skilled workforce and students with a clear route to technical employment. The AI Lab will be another key facility to be utilised as part of the GBSIoT.
