College links up with Family Learning Hubs to offer free courses

Solihull College & University Centre is working with venues across the borough in a new partnership to bring a wide range of free courses to local people’s doorsteps. 

Solihull family hubs courses aim to help households work better together in a wide range of areas, including sensory play, cooking on a budget, supporting your child’s maths and English in school, developing your child’s language through play, and understanding your child.

Understanding Your Child is a 10-week parenting group designed to support parent/child relationships. It is intended for parents and carers who want to know more about sensitive and effective parenting. Participants will be able to develop ways of thinking about parent/child relationships which can be developed into lifelong skills in a friendly and supportive environment. Areas of discussion will include topics like exploring feelings, parenting styles, communication and behavioural difficulties. 

The sessions take place at Hatchford Brook Family Hub, Riverside Hub, Elmwood Place and Evergreen Family Hub and are all completely free of charge.

Community Education Programme Manager, Katrina Griffin-Jones, commented: “This is a great opportunity for families to gain new skills which will be extremely beneficial to the household. Helping children at school can be such a barrier for many parents but we are on hand to make things a little bit easier! We will soon be offering courses for SEN families too.” 

Accredited English and maths courses for adults who may want to up skill are also available at the hubs.
