Solihull College & University Centre is setting a trend with the launch of its latest course for school leavers – Fashion.
The new course, based at Blossomfield Campus in Solihull, will cover many aspects of fashion and textiles. Students will learn core textile design skills and theories; such as design development, garment construction and illustration using traditional and digital techniques.
Digital and traditional art and design techniques are both key aspects of the course, with the latest Adobe Creative Suite software an important part of the design work. In addition to practical textile skills, contextual influences will be explored looking at the work of historical and contemporary designers.
The course is classroom based with individual, small team and wider group workshops, exploring and developing ideas, techniques, and practical textile skills. Some assignments will be ‘live’, working with industry professionals. There will also be the opportunity to work with specialists during enrichment and work experience activities. At the end of each year student work will be showcased as part of an exhibition.
Assistant Principal for Creative & Foundation, Sandra White, commented: “We know a lot of local school leavers are interested in fashion as a career, so the College is happy to be helping them on that route. We have been running this course at our partner, Stratford-upon-Avon College, for several years and the students have produced some stunning work. We can’t wait to see what our first cohort of Solihull students produce!”
Fashion is now open for applications via the Solihull College & University Centre website.
