College launches Aspire Hair & Beauty Salon
Friday, 3 March, 2017

Solihull College & University Centre prides itself on its excellent facilities which mirror those seen in industry. The facilities allow students to gain the skills needed to progress into the workplace whilst studying towards their qualification.

The hair and beauty department at the College is no different with its fully functioning salon open to members of the public, allowing students to showcase their skills and work with clients in a real industry environment. Students are also able to work with products used in industry such as Wella, Elemis, Crystal Clear Skincare and Dermalogica.

On Monday 27th February local businesses were invited to the launch of ‘Aspire Hair & Beauty’ – the College’s newly renamed and refurbished salon facilities. The College also invited Wella hairstylist Josh Goldsworthy to perform a hairdressing masterclass for students, staff and visitors. Josh, who recently won the 2016 IT Guy award at the Creative Head IT List awards, visited the College to demonstrate hairstyles as well as a cut and finish to the guests. Josh, who is accustomed to working with the stars on the set of Britain’s Next Top Model and The Only Way is Essex, was able to work his magic on two lucky students. Josh gave advice to the aspiring hairdressers commenting “Try to push yourself as much as you can, do things yourself outside of college and ask to assist people; I’m always happy to have young people help me with jobs I work on. You should always show passion, creativity and practice as much as you can; following hairdressers on social media is a great way to follow trends and invent your own style.”

Over 50 guests from local salons and businesses including managers from the Genting Hotel spa, who have previously hired students from the College, and awarding body VTCT attended the launch and all visitors were impressed with the facilities the College has on offer. The guests also gave great feedback on the students, staff and the new Aspire brand.

Josh Goldsworthy also provided his feedback stating that he has visited five colleges since becoming a hairdresser and the staff and students at Solihull College & University Centre were the best team to train and the College’s salon environment was the best set up and facilities he had seen in a place of education.

Head of School for Hair and Beauty at the College, Sara Sweeney commented “We are delighted to announce the launch of Aspire Hair & Beauty and extremely proud of what we have achieved as a College. Launching the Aspire salon will provide our students with even more opportunities to gain that valuable work experience they need to succeed in the industry and we are excited about the future of the salons. ”
