College invests in Virtual Reality lab
Thursday, 27 October, 2016

Solihull College & University Centre has recently invested in new computer facilities as they hope to expand to include courses in Virtual Reality in the future.

Computers, hardware and virtual reality headsets have been purchased by the College as they look to stay ahead of the game when it comes to the future of computing.

The College has developed a lab which is dedicated to virtual reality where students can get to grips with the equipment and eventually learn how to design VR experiences themselves.

Current university level students who are studying towards their HND in Creative Media Production (Computer Games Design) will be able to take full advantage of the new equipment. Students have already been busy creating their own virtual reality scenes and they can even walk around a virtual reality version of their new games lab!

The College has also started creating 360 videos which can be viewed using this equipment; users will soon be able to experience being in the animal care department at the College, getting up close with the meerkats, lizards and sheep in their respective enclosures as well as experience a dog agility session.

The College has worked with Box.co.uk to ensure the equipment was state-of-the-art.

Tieran Berrey, Sales Account Manager at Box.co.uk commented:

“As one of the leading suppliers for gaming systems in the UK, we at Box.co.uk were very excited to help the College set up their HE games design lab with a suite of Cube Gaming PCs! With a vast knowledge of PC gaming and VR systems, this lab is kitted out with the tools needed to design your own world, and we look forward to working with the college again in the future.”

Simon Hunt, Course Leader HE Games Design at Solihull College & University Centre commented:

“The investment by the College is fantastic and we’ve already had comments by students and partner institutions that it rivals many facilities at even some of the top Universities. By responding quickly to market changes our students can experience working with and developing for some of the very latest technologies. With VR being so new, the transferrable skills they are learning across the course and the experiences they create will give them a valuable head start in a soon to be exploding marketplace.”

The College will be showcasing their investment at this year’s Skills Show at the NEC, 17th-19th November and at the College’s Open Day on Saturday 26th November at the Blossomfield Campus.
