Solihull College & University Centre recently hosted the regional MEI Maths Challenge.
A team from the College competed against 8 other teams from across the region in a series of maths related challenges at the College’s Blossomfield Campus with students from Blossomfield taking home 2nd place in two of the three categories!
The MEI (Mathematics Education Innovation) challenge is for students retaking their Maths GCSE alongside their vocational course. It allows students to partake in challenges and activities designed to increase their confidence in maths related skills.
The team from College partner Stratford-upon-Avon College won 2 out of the 3 categories as well as the overall trophy for receiving the highest overall score.

Lily-Anna Day, was part of the winning team. She commented: “It was nice to work with others we don’t usually get to interact with. It’s given me confidence in my maths skills as I was able to work on lots of different areas of maths.”
Diontae Harness commented: “I was nervous, as I didn’t know what to expect at first but winning is a feeling that I don’t think will ever be replicated.”

Competition Lead and Quality Coach at the College, Katie Miller, commented: “It was fantastic to see students working as a team, embracing the challenge of maths, and showing their competitive spirit. Events like this not only help build confidence in maths but also develop resilience and problem-solving skills. It was great to see students from different colleges pushing themselves and each other to succeed.”
Maths and English Programme Manager, Abigail Coton, commented: “I was seeing students smile who’d I’ve never seen smile in a maths-related way before. It was a great environment. This was some of the students first awards and getting it in maths was a real confidence boost that I hope they take into their exams.”
With maths GSCE re-sits fast approaching this will be a great boost of confidence and self-belief for the students involved.
