Solihull College & University Centre is proud to announce that staff member Sarah Breslin has been nominated for the ‘Solihull’s Rising Star’ award at the Solihull Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards.
Additionally, the College has been shortlisted for the award in ‘Excellence in Training, Education & Development in People,’ reflecting its commitment to nurturing talent and promoting professional growth.
Sarah’s nomination for ‘Solihull’s Rising Star’ is a testament to her remarkable journey at the College, where she has dedicated 24 years of her life. Contrary to the typical image of a ‘rising star’ as someone new in a role and rapidly making an impact, Sarah’s journey is one of perseverance, self-discovery, and quiet yet profound influence.
As Talent Bank Co-ordinator and lead for Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (ED&I) and Wellness, Sarah has become an indispensable member of the College community. A proud member of the LGBTQ+ community, she leads the College’s Pride Network. Her advocacy doesn’t stop at the College gates, she is an ambassador for the “Her Game Too” initiative at Aston Villa Football Club and co-chairs Villa and Proud, the Club’s Official LGBTQ+ Supporters’ Network. Despite her battle with social anxiety and self-doubt, Sarah has risen to become a beacon of inspiration, championing inclusivity and wellbeing at every turn.
Principal, Dr. Rebecca Gater, commented: “Sarah has developed and delivered numerous staff development sessions and resources, and her efforts have created a safer, more inclusive environment for all. Sarah embodies the leadership qualities we value, and her impact on our community is immeasurable.”
The College’s shortlisting for the ‘Solihull Award for Excellence in Training, Education & Development in People’ further underscores its dedication to empowering staff and students alike. The College fosters a culture of ownership, autonomy, and continuous improvement, enabling individuals like Sarah to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the broader community.
Looking ahead, Sarah is planning the inaugural Solihull Pride event for 2025, working closely with Solihull BID to promote LGBTQ+ visibility and inclusion across the Borough. Her vision is to create a welcoming space where everyone can live without fear of judgment or discrimination.
“Since returning to life on campus in 2021, I have finally felt able to be my authentic self at work,” comments Sarah. “It’s liberating, and I’m now focused on amplifying the voices of those who might not otherwise be heard.”
As the College celebrates these nominations, it reaffirms its commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment that allows every individual to achieve their full potential.
