Solihull College & University Centre has been awarded ‘Commended’ status at this year’s Association of Colleges (AoC) Beacon Awards for ‘The Inenco Award for Education for Sustainable Development’.
The College is demonstrating leadership in support of the Government’s national ambitions for achieving net zero carbon in the UK by 2050 and has itself declared a climate emergency and signed up to the West Midlands net zero pledge in line with the AoCs own green commitment.
Head of Sustainability, Olly Scholefield, explains: “Finishing in the top 5 colleges nationally is a tremendous achievement and acknowledges the work that we are doing to embed sustainability across the curriculum and in college life, as well as the steps we have made in reducing our own carbon emissions on campus to achieve our ambitious target of becoming a sustainable net zero college by 2030. By being awarded commended status, the assessors felt that we demonstrated a high level of innovation, impact and sustainability.”
The Sustainability Strategy sets out the College’s ambitions and the actions to achieve these are being delivered by students, the staffing body, Governors and partners. A 100 strong collective of ‘Green Champions’ – volunteers from all areas of the College – are enabling the vision of the Senior Leadership Team to become an achievable reality.
The College views the challenges of climate change as an opportunity to create a better and more sustainable future in terms of the environment, economy and health and well-being as well as supporting its students to take positive action. The College is both proud of its achievements to date whilst being focused on the challenges ahead.
