Creative Media students at Solihull College & University Centre have created their own production company which is already proving a hit with local businesses.
The students work with external clients, predominantly small businesses in the local area, to create free media content. Students at ‘SCTV’ create content ranging from videos and print advertisements to photography, videos and podcasts.
The aim of creating SCTV was to help clients with the creative and promotional elements of their businesses whilst building student experience and networking with the local community. Students work on a mix of ongoing and one-off projects.
SCTV’s biggest project to date is their collaboration with AFC Solihull in the Midland Football League. This client brief started as a one-off project requiring photography and the filming of interviews on match days. After the group showcased their skills to the club, AFC Solihull decided to make the partnership a continuing one. The SCTV team now help the club by creating content for their social media channels as well as creating and running their YouTube channel.
Student photographer Ben, 19, stated: “The production company has furthered my experience in the industry, allowing me to develop and reach standards set by industry professionals. I have really benefited from finding out first-hand what it takes to work in the industry.”
Director for SCTV Jack, 17, added: “This experience really helps us expand our portfolio and prepares us for real life careers.”
The students have worked in collaboration with the likes of Solihull Food Festival, Comic Con and Breast Cancer Awareness. They have also created their own talk show which they film in their spare time.
AFC Solihull chairman David Tyler stated ‘working with SCTV is simply an excellent win win situation, the students are gaining a real life project experience with an access all areas remit of a Charter Standard Football Club. We have also used this opportunity to create a new club MediaZone on several media platforms enabling many to follow our journey’.
