During Disabilities History Month and as we approach the International Day for Persons with Disabilities on 3rd December, Solihull College & University Centre has reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing a community where disabled people can thrive.
Whether in education or the workplace, the College recognises and celebrates the valuable contributions, talents and unique perspectives that disabled learners and employees bring to our college and wider community.
At the College, inclusivity and support are at the heart of everything we do. The College is committed to creating a welcoming environment for learners and staff with neurodiverse conditions, learning difficulties and disabilities, fostering their growth and success.
Supporting Learners on Vocational Courses
Solihull College & University Centre encourages applications from individuals with learning difficulties and disabilities. The College’s intention is to make education accessible to everyone, ensuring that all students can achieve their learning goals in an environment that supports their unique needs.
The College aims to create an enriching experience for every student. Whether through tailored resources, accommodations, or specialist support staff, the focus is on breaking down barriers to learning and providing everyone with the resources and opportunities they require to succeed.
Empowering Through Supported Internships
The College’s supported internships provide young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), a pathway to meaningful and sustainable employment. These structured study programs are tailored to equip learners with the essential skills needed to thrive in the workplace through hands-on, practical learning.
Interns benefit from the guidance of a fully trained job coach to support on-the-job training ensuring any concerns are promptly addressed, encouraging a positive and productive experience for both the intern and the employer. Supported internships empower individuals to achieve their goals while employers recognise and help them reach their potential.
Inspiring Career Paths with Inclusive Apprenticeships
Inclusive apprenticeships are designed to remove barriers to learning and employment for individuals with special educational needs, learning difficulties or disabilities. These apprenticeships provide flexibility in the English and maths requirements, as well as reasonable adjustments for the end point assessment. This enables learners who may face challenges with traditional academic requirements to achieve through this practical training program.
Committed to a Disability Confident Future
Solihull College & University Centre is a proud participant in the Disability Confident Scheme. This government initiative inspires organisations to enhance their recruitment, retention and professional development strategies to fully support disabled employees.
Alongside this, the College is dedicated to empowering employers they work with to embrace a culture of inclusivity. Earlier this year, the Business Development team underwent specialised training by the Disability Resource Centre to assist employers in optimising their recruitment processes. By focusing on skills, unique abilities and the positive impact of diverse perspectives, the training emphasises how hiring individuals with learning difficulties and disabilities can fill skills gaps, encourage innovative thinking and drive organisational growth.
A Culture of Inclusion
Through these initiatives, Solihull College & University Centre continues to champion inclusivity and celebrate the contributions of disabled people. The College believes in nurturing talent, fostering innovation and creating a supportive environment where everyone can achieve their full potential.
The College is building a brighter, more inclusive future where all students and employees can thrive.
