Art equipment donated to college in memory of local artist

18th March 2025

Solihull College & University Centre has gratefully taken delivery of art supplies donated by the family of a local painter and craftswoman.

Julie Harris-Hart was a talented artist and sculptor who grew up in Solihull and sadly passed away as a result of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) last year. Her son Jon wanted her art supplies to be put to good use and offered them to the College.

The art department has recently taken possession of paints, brushes, canvases, clay, sculpting tools, literature, and also a kiln.

Jon says he hopes his mum’s legacy lives on: “There will be an article in the MND Association publication showing the final sculptures she made and fired using the kiln from her home near Widney Manor. These were inspired by her experiences with the condition and we hope that part of her legacy will be to raise some awareness. There will also be an exhibition featuring her work coming up soon.”

Art Technician, Charlotte Lee, commented: “We’re incredibly grateful for this generous donation from Jon, given in memory of his late mother, Julie. As a talented local artist, who grew up in the area, she wanted to give back to the community and help the next generation. The College will make good use of this equipment, and we’d like to again thank Jon and his family for their heartfelt donation.”

The equipment will be used by the College’s students studying a range of creative courses including art, painting and ceramics.
