Animal Welfare students from Solihull College & University Centre have secured first place in every category at the inaugural West Midlands Colleges Inter-College Competition.
The event took place at South Staffordshire College’s Rodbaston College campus and welcomed colleges from across the region including Dudley, Halesowen, South Staffs and BMet.

Students proudly showcase the enrichment activities they designed to keep animals happy and engaged.
The new inter-college competition initiative is designed to help give students more confidence, raise aspirations, standards and employability. Each college will take a turn in hosting the event.
Programme Manager, James Clarke, says it was such a positive day. He commented: “Our students went to Rodbaston College and showed determination, confidence and excellent knowledge throughout the different competitions. Through their hard work and support for one another, we achieved the unthinkable and won every single competition set against other colleges in the region. Well done to everyone involved, we are all very proud.”
Learners from Levels 1, 2 and 3 all took part.
Level 1 students set up a rodent enclosure, Level 2 students deep cleaned and set up a rabbit enclosure, and Level 3 students designed and created an enrichment activity for primates.
Students had a great experience and brushed up on important skills. Student Amelia commented: “It was lovely meeting people from different teams and colleges”, and Rylie added how working together was a real positive, commenting: “Communicating with different people and all working together was great!”
Competitions like these build confidence and real-world skills, such as time management, working under pressure and decision making and problem solving, making a huge difference to students’ employability and future career aspirations.
