A-Level History students from Solihull College & University Centre have been exploring Berlin to help add further understanding to the topics covered on their course.
The trip was organised to help give the students studying German history 1918-1945 a sense of lived experiences of the places and concepts studied. The trip took them to the Reichstag, scene of the Reichstag Fire and subsequent dismantling of German democracy in 1933.

They also visited the iconic Brandenburg Gate and the Berlin TV tower where the students got to see the city from the observation floor, 200 metres up.

Students visited the Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp Museum and the Former East German Stasi interrogation centre. The Sachsenhausen concentration camp was built in 1936 and was the first new concentration camp to be established following the appointment of Reich Leader SS Heinrich Himmler.
History and Uniformed Protective Services lecturer, Chris Hourihan, commented: “Reading history can give an understanding, seeing history gives us a new perspective. Nothing beats seeing for yourself the places where history happened.”
