Where will this course lead?

This course focusses on developing competencies for the workshop which will ultimately support students in preparing for a range of employment opportunities in their chosen sector. These core competencies collectively summarise the key capabilities that are important across the sector, covering areas of relevant expertise and technical skills that would be required within the sector to successfully perform a job, as defined in current advertised job vacancies.

The course has professional body recognition with both the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). By aligning to professional body competency standards, content and assessment supports students to develop as professional practitioners for the future.

The course can also lead to a higher-level apprenticeship in your desired mechatronics field.

What will I study?

  • Unit 4001: Engineering Design 15 4
  • Unit 4002: Engineering Maths 15 4
  • Unit 4004: Managing a Professional Engineering Project
  • Unit 4014: Production Engineering for Manufacture 15 4

How will this course be delivered?

The course is delivered through various assignments that covers 120 credits over 2 years these will be taught through practical demonstrations, workshops, and lectures.

What qualifications will I get?

Mechatronics - Higher National Certificate (HNC) (subject to approval)

How will I be assessed?

All units are assessed by assignments; each unit assignment is matched to the content of the unit and the criteria being assessed. Each unit will be graded at Pass,

Merit or Distinction levels, and then the unit grades will be aggregated by the awarding organisation to give an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction for the whole qualification.

Pearson-set units are mandatory and target industry-specific skills.

For the HNC, our college will assess one compulsory Pearson-set unit targeted at particular skills. This is a Level 4 core unit carrying 15 credits.

How do I get a place on the course?

Formal interview with the course team.

If you have a learning difficulty or disability, please let us know when you apply. You will be offered support in your interview. If you need help completing your application, we can help with this too. https://www.solihull.ac.uk/uni-level-learner/student-services

What are the entry requirements?

A level 3 BTEC National Qualification (with at least Merit grade combinations), 4 GCSEs grade C or level 4/5 and above and/or (depending on size of BTEC) at least one A-Level or 2AS Levels (32 points), in an appropriate subject (Mathematics/Physics/Chemistry)

A T-Level graded at a Merit.

Other qualifications and combinations of qualifications will be considered and may be also acceptable - please contact HE.Admissions@solihull.ac.uk

English language requirements: Students who are non-native English speakers or who have not studied the final two years of school in English but can demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate to IELTS 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4, 5 or 6 qualifications may be considered as eligible to apply for the programme.

What else do I need to know?

The course also aligns itself to the Higher Apprenticeships and Occupational Standards, mapping itself with the Engineering Manufacturing Technician occupational standard.

You will need to provide your own scientific calculator and stationery such as folders, paper, notetaking exercise book, and pens. There indicative cost shown below for typical materials in support of learning:

  • Scientific Calculator (approx. £10)
  • Optional: Books: £100 for the year with average book price at £15 to £20
  • Optional: Printing and binding in the college over and above print allowance (dependent upon page numbers and colour)
  • Optional: Laptop/Home computer (required for assessment work and accessing software remotely)
  • Optional: Project based costs may be incurred if components are required which are not available through college stock.
  • Optional: 3D printing may form part of a project.

Where possible, the college will pay for the printing materials. However, for larger designs, a contribution may be required from the student.

Please read our full terms and conditions.
