Where will this course lead?

The Higher National Diploma in Healthcare Professions in England with HTQ status has been developed in conjunction with the NHS and independent sector employers, and education providers who are currently usings HND's to educate and train their workforce. As a level 5 qualification it meets Health Education England's assistant practitioner framework requirements.

This qualification has been designed for those working as or seeking to become trainee assistant practitioners and, ultimately assistant practitioners in health and social care, and to pursue or advance their career in health care practice or related fields. Once you have studied the level 5 Higher National Diploma, you could develop your careers in health care by entering employment, committing to continuing professional development or going to university.

What are Higher Technical Qualifications: These qualifications have been developed by awarding bodies, who have worked with employers and businesses to make sure that students get the specific training, knowledge, and skills they need for their chosen career.

What will I study?

You will study a range of units that will enable you to progress successfully into further study or the world of work. This will also include independent skills, interpersonal skills, clinical practice skill and research and evaluation skills. Some of the units you will study include:

  • Law, Policy and Ethical Practice
  • Demonstrating Professional Principles and Values in Health and Social Care Practice,
  • Promoting physical and mental health and emotional wellbeing.
  • Planning care in practice
  • End of Life care planning and support
  • Planning care in practice.

How will this course be delivered?

This course will take place over 2 years. It will be face to face in a college environment. During the 1st year students will study a substantial core of learning in the Level 4 Higher National Certificate and build on this in the Level 5 Higher National Diploma during the 2nd year.

What qualifications will I get?

Year 1: Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Healthcare Professions' Support for England

Year 2: Pearson BTEC level 5 Higher National Diploma in Healthcare Professions' Support for England.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through assignment work and practical experience. The assignments will be completed using a variety of methods. Whilst on placement you will complete a Practice Learning, Assessment and Development Portfolio.

What are the entry requirements?

  • 4 GCSE's Grade 4 or above and must include English Language and Mathematics (or Functional Skills Level 2)
  • 2 A Levels in relevant subjects at grade C.
  • Level 3 qualification in relevant subject(s) equivalent to 96 UCAS points.
  • T-Level qualification in relevant subject(s) equivalent to 96 UCAS points (an overall 'pass', with a Grade C on the core component)

English language requirements

Students who are non-native English speakers or who have not studied the final two years of school in English but can demonstrate capability in English at a standard commensurate to IELTS 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 being awarded on individual sections for a level 4, 5 or 6 qualifications may be considered as eligible to apply for the programme.

What else do I need to know?

Thanks to the West Midlands Combined Authority, the College has been given funding to allow 15 students to study this course for free. (Eligibility criteria apply - You must be in low wage employment/unemployed and live within the WMCA area. Please contact emma.elkington@solihull.ac.uk for full requirements).

The teachers on the course are all vocationally trained and qualified so they can offer you the best experience with up-to-date information. This course is a full-time programme. Timetables will be issued to successful applicants at induction and enrolment in September of the current Academic year.

Additional costs:

It is recommended that you budget for your own laptop. If this is not possible the College has IT resources that you can use.

Also, an Enhanced DBS will be required for this course, Students may also wish to purchase key texts and there may be external visit opportunities that will also incur additional costs. Other costs include photocopying and printing and depending on the direction and ambition of your work. We suggest budgeting approximately £250-£300 in the first year.
