Where will this course lead?

This course will be delivered in partnership with your employer, where you attend college day-release at our Blossomfield Campus and spend the remainder of your working week in your place of work and under the direction of your employer.

The day in college is predominantly classroom-based; however project units may take place in a more suitable location.

What will I study?

You will study the knowledge, skills and behaviours as set out in apprenticeship standard which will include the following subjects from the BTEC Level 4 HNC in Construction (Surveying)…

6 Mandatory units:

· Individual Project

· Construction Technology

· Construction Practice and Management

· Legal and Statutory Requirements in Construction

· Measuring and Estimating

· Financial Management & Business Practices in Construction

2 Optional (specialist) units - Here are some examples:

· Science and Materials

· Surveying. Measuring and Setting out

· Tender and Procurement

You are required to complete 8 units to achieve the HNC.

You will also create a portfolio to demonstrate your development at work, to evidence the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to meet the standard.

What qualifications will I get?

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician by the relevant professional engineering institution and in accordance with the requirements of the Engineering Council, as the registration body.

You may also obtain the following qualifications:

· Level 4 Edexcel BTEC HNC in Construction - Surveying

· Level 2 Functional Skills Maths and English (If required)

How will I be assessed?

The part of your Apprenticeship that you follow at college is assessed through written assignments and some practical observations. The part of your apprenticeship which is followed in the workplace will be reviewed during regular visits by a college reviewer.

Completion will be achieved by successfully passing the End Point Assessment (EPA) with a relevant professional organisation. This will consist of an online test, a project and professional discussion.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be employed in a relevant field (as indicated above) for a minimum of 30 hours per week and be at least 18 years old.

You typically need a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 9/A* to 4/C, including Maths, English Language and ICT; alternatively, you should possess an

equivalent qualification, such as a Level 2 BTEC Diploma in Construction or Engineering, at Merit or Distinction Level.

1 A Level, or 2 AS Levels (40 UCAS points), or an equivalent qualification such Level 3 BTEC National in a relevant Construction or Engineering subject.

Students with existing Level 4/5 qualifications may be eligible for some accreditation for prior learning, which will be discussed on an individual basis.

If you are a mature student over the age of 21 with an associated background and/or previous experience, you may be accepted without formal qualifications.

What else do I need to know?

There are no direct additional costs for this course, but you may want to purchase some text books for further reading. A suggested reading list will be supplied at the beginning of your course; however, we also have a wide selection of library books and electronic books for you to use too. You will be expected to supply your own stationery, such as folders, pens and paper. A scientific calculator is required and a set of mathematical instruments,

including a protractor and compass. Connection to the internet is expected, but facilities are available at College to do this if necessary. You need to provide your own safety boots and high visibility jacket, suitable for use on highways (i.e. yellow not orange). You will also be expected to provide your own transport to site visits, but these are usually local building sites - The furthest trips to attend are for laboratories.

Costs depend on the direction and ambition of your work. We suggest budgeting approximately £250 for materials and work-books in the first year.

What can I do after this course?

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you can:

· Continue your employment in the industry

OR

· Progress onto an HND in Construction, or it is often possible to gain entrance to the second year, of a three year Degree.
