What will I study?

This is a 6 week, intense taster course, designed for beginners.

On this course you will be introduced to skills that will give you the opportunity to continue to the next level. You will be encouraged to develop ideas, together with practical skills.

By the end of the 6 weeks, you will have produced a garment (skirt / trousers or cushion / tote bag). The patterns and equipment for these will be provided, by professional staff in a friendly environment.

1. Select one theme from a choice of two.

2. You will be shown how to research your chosen theme, using primary and secondary sources.

3. You will learn how to create different mark making skills, which are essential for both illustration work and design surface pattern.

You will be shown how to develop your design ideas. This week we will look at fashion illustrations, when you will be introduced to quick and easy techniques to help with your own designs.We will also demonstrate some simple textiles techniques, which will include, batik, basic screen printing ,applique and tie dying.

4. Intro into basic sewing techniques. It is recommended that you join the sewing class on a Tuesday evening as well. This will enable you to gain experience in the use of the sewing machine and techniques You will cut out your chosen pattern from the choices given. You will start to embellish it, based on your chosen theme, using techniques you have learned so far.

5. Continue with creating your piece

6. Finish off garment. Produce illustrations based on your finished garment.

Full attendance is important in order to progress and keep up with the course content.

How will this course be delivered?

This is a 2-hour per week class taught at Blossomfield Campus. 

What qualifications will I get?

This is a personal development course - there is no official qualification gained. 

How will I be assessed?

This course will be informally assessed by the tutor also by the student's self-assessment and evaluation.

What are the entry requirements?

No qualifications or previous experience are needed for this course. 

You must be aged 19+.

You will need

  • A3 sketchbook
  • Pencils
  • Watercolour paint and paintbrushes
  • White cotton material (Tutor will advise the amount once you've chosen your pattern)
  • Fabric scissors
  • Paper scissors
  • Needles
  • Pins
  • Range of cotton thread.

We will supply all other essential equipment .
