Where will this course lead?

This course is designed to aid you in grooming your own dog at home.

What will I study?

Throughout your studies, you will study the following:

  • What coat type your dog has and how to maintain it at home.
  • What home grooming equipment and tools are appropriate for your dog's coat type.
  • How to complete a pet groom on your dog including bathing and drying, a basic body clip of one length all over, nail clipping, ear cleaning, trimming pads, shaping your dog's feet, ears and tail, and styling a basic head shape.

How will this course be delivered?

You will be required to spend 4 hours at the Solihull College Dog Grooming Academy, Blossomfield Campus. This is a practical session where you will complete a groom on your own dog with advice, guidance and support from your Tutor. This is a one-to-one session with your tutor with an opportunity to have a second person present learning skills on the same dog.

What qualifications will I get?

A college certificate.

How will I be assessed?

There will be no formal assessment for this course.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements for this course.

What else do I need to know?

You must be 19+ to attend. You must provide your own small to medium sized dog. Examples of suitable breeds include purebreds such as poodles, bichon frise, terriers that require clipping and crossbreeds such as cockapoos, labradoodles, cavapoos, cavachons and shichons.

Your dog should be:

  • Comfortable with grooming and handling.
  • Be free of matting.
  • Have 6-8 weeks of growth since their last professional groom.
  • Fully vaccinated

This course is not suitable for young puppies under 6 months of age due to its duration. This course does not teach breed standard grooms or hand stripping.
