The VetSkill VTEC Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants is designed for those who are seeking future employment opportunities within the dog grooming sector or those currently working in a voluntary or employed position in a professional salon.

This introductory study programme is aimed at those who wish to develop their theoretical understanding and practical skills to support a Professional Groomer in the role of Dog Grooming Assistant. The qualification covers:

  • Providing bathing, drying and basic grooming for a variety of dog breeds, coat types and health conditions
  • An introduction to canine anatomy, behaviour, first aid and customer care
  • Cleanliness and biosecurity in the dog grooming salon

What will I study?

Throughout your studies, you will cover all 7 Units from the following list:

  • Health, Safety and Legislation for the Canine Grooming Environment
  • Introduction to Health and Welfare for the Dog Grooming Assistant
  • Introduction to Canine First Aid
  • Canine Behaviour, Handling and Restraint Techniques for the Dog Grooming Assistant
  • Biosecurity and Maintenance for Canine Grooming
  • Introduction to Customer Service and Sales
  • Foundations for Canine Grooming

How will this course be delivered?

You will be required to attend one day per week for 32 weeks at the Blossomfield Campus College. The course delivery will consist of both practical and theory sessions.

You will be expected to complete approximately 4 hours of independent study a week in order to complete this course.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed on your practical skills and theory understanding through a synoptic online multiple-choice question test and relevant portfolios of written and practical evidence. This course is a distinction/pass/fail course, and all elements of the course will need to be successfully achieved for you to gain the qualification.

What are the entry requirements?

Applicants should have qualifications or be working to a Level 2 standard. Learners should be able to evidence English Language and Maths grades at GCSE grade D/3 or above, or through an equivalent qualification.

What else do I need to know?

Learners will need to purchase their own dog grooming uniform to include a tunic and trousers.

Attendance to a work placement or voluntary position within a dog grooming salon or canine establishment is highly encouraged to enhance learning and skill development.

What can I do after this course?

Providing you successfully complete the course and receive a good reference; learners can progress onto the VetSkill VTEC Level 3 Diploma in Dog Grooming or an Animal Management at Level 2 or Level 3.

Learners will be qualified to work as a Dog Grooming Assistant within the canine sector, including dog grooming salons and other canine establishments who offer grooming services.
