At level 3, you have a great deal of technical skills and knowledge and looking to gain more responsibility by supervising others, running your own business or moving to a diagnostic technician level. You work with minimum supervision and have a good record of safety, fault correction and ensuring work meets the required standard. You could become a Light Vehicle/Heavy Vehicle/Motorcycle Diagnostic Technician or a FastFit Supervisor or running your own business.
You'll cover things like:
- routine vehicle maintenance (cars, vans, lorries, motorcycles, hybrid vehicles, etc)
- removal and replacement of vehicle units
- diagnosis and rectification of vehicle faults
- working safely on hybrid vehicles
- valeting cars or running your own car valeting business
- fitting and replacing vehicle tyres
- maintenance and installation of alarms, digital instruments, satellite navigation systems
The course involves practical assessments in the motor vehicle workshop and the theories in the classroom.
Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles Level 3 Diploma CG
Assessment is via combination of essential underpinning knowledge with practical learning. This includes practical tasks, oral/written questioning and online tests. Online multiple choice tests (graded Pass, Merit, Distinction) and assignments (graded Pass)
Places are offered by interview and an initial assessment.
Minimum qualifications: Mathematics and English language at GCSE grade C/4 or above or equivalent and a relevant full level 2 motor vehicle qualification.
If you are applying as a school leaver, please initially apply for the Entry Level or Level 1 course depending on your expected grades. You will then be able to work towards progression onto higher level courses.

Good levels of English and Maths are important for your success in your course, your chosen vocation and life. Throughout your course you will continue to develop your English and Maths skills in your vocational classes.
If you haven't achieved an A*/1 - C/4 grade in English or Maths at GCSE, or a Level 2 Functional Skill, you will also be working towards a qualification in English or Maths at a level that will enable you to progress towards these grades.
