Where will this course lead?

This course is ideal for beginners or for those with some experience; it also makes an excellent refresher.
It is an ideal first step and can lead to employment as a cake decorator or become self-employed offering cakes for special occasions.
 

What will I study?

Autumn Term - Learn how to make a quick and easy sponge cake with simple modelling techniques in icing or marzipan. You will also make a novelty Halloween cake and a traditional Christmas cake incorporating simple modelling skills. You will also learn how to make inexpensive modelling paste.

Winter Term - You will increase your skills in cutting and shaping novelty Valentine and Easter/Spring cakes. This will incorporate some simple sugarcraft flowers and basic piping techniques.

Summer Term - You will learn how to make other cakes such as novelty cakes and other cakes suitable for birthdays and weddings. This will also include more methodical modelling techniques.
 

How will this course be delivered?

Practical class based work lead by tutor demonstration; some designs may have to be completed at home.

What qualifications will I get?

This is a personal enrichment programme. 

How will I be assessed?

This course is for personal development and is informally assessed by the tutor with self-assessment and evaluation by the student.

What are the entry requirements?

Students must be aged 19+.

What else do I need to know?

The tutor will inform you on the first session of any tools and equipment that are required. She will also have a list of suppliers where these will be available. You can use ready-made cakes or dummies to decorate.

Please note: Materials are not supplied for Cakes, Flowers/Floristry, Textiles, Soft Furnishings, Homemade Crafts, Calligraphy, Art, Cookery, Tiling, Painting & Decorating, Sewing or Dressmaking.

Students are responsible for providing their own ingredients and some equipment. 

This course will run subject to a minimum class size.

What can I do after this course?

We also offer a range of craft courses for adults, as well as Wider Family Learning courses designed for adults and children to learn together.
