Where will this course lead?

This course is ideal for you if you are working as a Building Services Design Technician or associated role, providing assistance to engineers and other construction professionals in the development of cost effective technical and sustainable design solutions involving the production of three dimensional models, calculations, specifications, reports and drawings taking into account, where appropriate, pre-fabrication techniques. The work typically includes systems such as renewable technologies, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, drainage, lighting, power, controls and lifts. Buildings and infrastructure take on many forms from newly built facilities to the refurbishment of premises for every sector of industry. As a design technician you could be working under supervision in a design consultancy, a contractor or a manufacturing company.

This apprenticeship standard will develop your knowledge and prepare you for an Industry role or for progression onto an HNC or HND or Degree level course.

What will I study?

Skills, knowledge and behaviours (KSBs) as set out in apprenticeship standard which will include 12 credits from the following 10 units of the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Building Services Engineering.

Subjects you study include: - Six mandatory units.

  • Construction Principles (double credit with exam in January of first year)
  • Construction Design (double credit with exam in April/May of first year)
  • Construction Technology
  • Health and Safety in Construction
  • Provision of Primary Service in Construction
  • Building Services Science

You will study a further four specialist units from the following, which are selected to provide students with a broad knowledge of Building Services, (some changes may be made to these units to accommodate staff specialisms and timetabling):

  • Further Mathematics for Construction
  • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Design
  • Electrical Principles in Building Services Engineering
  • Building Services Control Systems
  • Graphical Detailing

How will this course be delivered?

This course will be delivered in partnership with your employer, one day in College at the Blossomfield Road Campus with the remainder of the week spent in your place of work under the direction of your employer.

The work in College is predominantly classroom based with some lab sessions to support learning.

What qualifications will I get?

On completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician by the relevant professional engineering institution in accordance with the requirements of the Engineering Council as the registration body.

You may also gain:

  • Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services) (technical certificate)
  • Level 3 Building Services Engineering for Technicians (NVQ)
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (If required)

How will I be assessed?

The part of your Apprenticeship that you follow at College is assessed through examinations, controlled assessments, written assignments and practical observations. (Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Building Services)). The part of your apprenticeship which is followed in the workplace (NVQ and KSBs) will be reviewed during regular visits by a college reviewer.

Completion will be achieved my successfully passing the End Point Assessment with a relevant professional organisation (e.g. Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers). This will consist of a presentation and structured interview.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be employed as indicated above.

You need a minimum of four GCSEs at Grade A/8 - C/4 including Mathematics, English Language and ICT or an equivalent qualification such as a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction or Engineering at Merit or Distinction Level.

Mature students, over the age of 21, with a suitable background or experience may be accepted without formal qualifications. If unsure please come and talk to us. Admission procedures are flexible and friendly.

All students will be invited to interview before an offer is made.

What else do I need to know?

This course is a part time program and you will be expected to attend 1 day per week between the hours of 9-6, timetables will be issued to successful applicants prior to induction and enrolment in September of the current Academic year.

There are no direct additional costs for this course but you may want to purchase some text books for further reading, a suggested reading list will be supplied at the beginning of your course. We have a wide selection of library books and electronic books for you to use for this course. You will be expected to supply your own stationery such as folders, paper and pens. A scientific calculator is required and a set of mathematical instruments including a protractor and compass. Connection to the internet is expected, but facilities are available at College to do this if necessary. You need to provide your own safety boots and High visibility jacket suitable for use on site. You will be expected to provide your own transport to site visits but these are usually local with the furthest to attend laboratory trips or local construction sites

Additional costs

Costs depend on the direction and ambition of your work. We suggest budgeting approximately £250 for materials and work-books in the first year.

What can I do after this course?

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you can:

- Continue with employment in the Industry

Or

- Progress onto a Higher Apprenticeship, HNC/HND in Building Services, or a Foundation Degree in Construction.
