College departments join forces to produce trophy
Thursday, 19 November, 2015

The Solihull BID Excellence Awards celebrate the best of what Solihull’s array of businesses have to offer. As the sponsor of the ‘Best Company for Outstanding Innovation & Enterprise’ award for the 2015 ceremony, Solihull College & University Centre were asked to produce the trophy for the presentation. This would involve departments from across the College’s two campuses working together on the design and manufacturing process.

Steve Riley, Extended Diploma Graphics Co-Ordinator, in collaboration with students from the course, designed the trophy. The designs were then sent over to the College’s Woodlands Campus where Engineering tutor Mark Piatowski created the 3D design and used a 3D printer to create the model. A local company has been sourced to put the final touches on the trophy.

Steve Riley comments ‘As a department, this is the first time we have experienced having work created using the 3D printing technology. Seeing how the process works has been a learning experience for both myself and the students. We are excited to see how our use of this technology can evolve in the future’.

College Principal, John Callaghan comments ‘It is great to see departments from across the College coming together on projects like this. We encourage this type of work as it gives students a sense of the collaborative techniques prevalent in modern industry – something they will go on to experience throughout their careers’.

The Solihull BID Excellence Awards take place on Thursday 19th November at St John’s Hotel, Solihull.
