Foundation students thrive in work experience

17th June 2024

Foundation Learning students from Solihull College & University Centre have recently completed various work experience placements around the Blossomfield Campus to help develop their employability skills.

This initiative has provided invaluable hands-on experience for students with additional needs, fostering a more inclusive and supportive college community.

Eight students gained practical experience in diverse areas of the College: two in the Animal Welfare Centre, two at the College’s gym – Club Vitalize, two in the Make Up studio, and two in the refectory. This program not only equipped these students with essential skills for future employment but also enriched their personal growth and confidence.

ALD Lecturer, Sally Courtney, initiated this programme to help students gain the experience they need for their CVs and job interviews, as many face challenges in securing opportunities. She commented: “Most of the students themselves don’t recognise their own skills and abilities which is a real shame. I also wanted to enhance the relationships between other staff and students at the College, helping them learn how to work more effectively with individuals who have learning difficulties.”

The positive impact of this initiative is evident in the feedback from staff members working closely with the students. Animal Care Technician, Sophie Walker, shares her experience: “Working with Emily and Michael has been a truly rewarding experience. Over the last few weeks, I’ve seen their confidence grow as they’ve worked super hard to learn and develop skills. They have been great at following instructions and handling a variety of tasks, being gentle and considerate when working with animals. It’s been a real pleasure to help them and watch them improve. Their enthusiasm and dedication have been inspiring, and I’m proud of what they’ve achieved in such a short period of time.”

This initiative highlights the Foundation Learning team’s dedication to inclusivity and the professional development of all students, fostering a culture where the entire college community actively supports and acknowledges the invaluable contributions of students with additional needs.
