Student secures placement at top international law firm

18th April 2024

A Forensic and Criminal Investigation student from Solihull College & University Centre has been selected for a placement at one of the top 5 international law firms.

Cal Eades was invited to the offices of Reed Smith in London to spend the day with top law professionals. The experience was incredibly positive. He took part in a panel discussion and had the chance to speak to solicitors about their job roles and experiences. He was given an insight into how law works and the skills he requires.

Cal wasn’t always sure on his route into a career. He has ADHD and struggled at school with behaviour problems.

Looking at courses available at Solihull College, he felt Forensic & Criminal investigation would be a good fit and retook his science GCSE. He comments: “I really didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life – I’d always loved the thought of working in criminology and law enforcement, so I thought this was the ideal path.

“I really had to take stock of my life. I had been in a special behavioural school, and I knew I needed to make the change to ensure my life was fulfilling. So, I started working on my social skills, got myself into a better place mentally, as I knew I would have to work so hard to pass the course and become a solicitor.”

Cal did exactly that. The hard work paid off and he’s received distinctions for every part of his course and now has a choice when it comes to which university he wants to go to.

“I really want to be a solicitor. I want to help people and fight for someone to have a voice. There are so many options available after studying my degree, it’s exciting to see which aspect of law I will go into.”

Cal has three university offers for September.
