Adult GCSE English students from Solihull College & University Centre recently experienced the magic of live performance during a visit to the Alexandra Theatre.
The captivating two-man show, based on Susan Hill’s best-selling novel ‘The Woman in Black,’ provided students with a real-world connection to the literature they’ve been studying as part of their course.
The play, which has also been adapted into a Hollywood blockbuster featuring Danielle Radcliffe, offered students a unique opportunity to witness the transformation of a story into theatre. Throughout the performance, the audience was treated to spine-tingling tension, moments of humour, and unexpected surprises that brought the narrative to life in an immersive manner.
As part of their one-year, part-time course, the GCSE English students explore a diverse range of texts, encompassing both fiction and non-fiction. The curriculum includes studying extracts from renowned works, equipping learners with a deeper understanding of storytelling techniques. Drawing inspiration from successful authors, students learn to craft vivid descriptions, create compelling characters, and develop narratives with unexpected plot twists.
Teacher and Coordinator, Paul Doidge, expressed his enthusiasm for the impact of the theatre trip on the students’ learning journey: “The show helped students to step into the world of one of the stories they’ve been exploring, bringing it to life on stage. It’s so rewarding to see their skills and knowledge grow so much during their studies.”
