Where will this course lead?

The course is designed to equip students with a working understanding of life as a self employed painter and decorator, equipping them with fundamental skills and knowledge.

What will I study?

By the end of the course, learners will:

  • Understand the importance of job preparation (sanding and filling)
  • Describe how to select the right paint for different rooms and uses (internal and external)
  • Demonstrate how to cut in a straight line and paint a wall, door, ceiling and skirting board
  • Explain when to use a brush, and when to use a roller and how to maintain equipment for painting and decorating
  • Demonstrate trouble shooting (for example, bubbling wallpaper and paint spillages)
  • Demonstrate how to strip, cut and hang wall paper
  • Understand how to price a job and put together a quotation
  • Explain the importance of good customer communications and work ethic
  • Describe how to access a self assessment form for HMRC calculations
  • Understand the importance of health and safety

How will this course be delivered?

The course runs for 10 weeks, for 2 hours per session and is 70% practical and 30% theory.

What qualifications will I get?

You will receive a certificate to show you have completed this course.

How will I be assessed?

Your work will be assess on a weekly basis through informal assessment of your practical skills.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be 19 years or older.

Your tutor has operated a successful painting and decorating business for over 20 years, and brings a wealth of experience to his delivery.
