Where will this course lead?

This course is for dog enthusiasts who want to learn more about our canine companions - for personal interest or for work. It provides opportunities for you and your dog to learn together in and out of the classroom. It is ideal for any new or seasoned dog owner wishing to know how to better understand how dogs learn and how they can work with their dog to teach them more easily in a variety of ways. 

Understand how dogs learn and how to utilise their interests to successfully achieve training goals and build a lasting and rewarding bond through training.  

This short course is ideally paired with "understanding dogs and their behaviour" and "canine care and welfare"

What will I study?

Teaching Dogs runs from April - June for 9 weeks and will cover; 

• Canine learning mechanism  

• working with dogs as individuals 

• Reward and reinforcement and how to use it successfully 

• Why punishment doesn't work 

• Planning training sessions to ensure success 

• Activities to enjoy with your dog to build a strong relationship 

How will this course be delivered?

Lessons will involve lectures, discussions, group work and practicals with your own dogs.

What qualifications will I get?

Vocational CPD leading to college completion certificate.

How will I be assessed?

No formal assessment involved.

How do I get a place on the course?

No interview required.

What are the entry requirements?

Having access to either your own or a friend/relatives dog will ensure you get the best from this course - however if your dog has a fear of other dogs or is likely to find the teaching situation stressful, working with others in a group is a possibility. 

What else do I need to know?

This class runs on Tuesday evenings from 6.30 - 8.30pm on Blossomfield Campus. Reading lists will be provided to encourage private study, and each unit is completed in one term.

What can I do after this course?

Past students of this course have used the skills acquired to help them run dog training classes, grooming businesses and to help at local dog training clubs. Further courses include short courses in canine behaviour, care and welfare, first aid or specialisms such as grooming.
