Where will this course lead?

This course is ideal for you if you are working as a Surveying Technician or associated role, acting on behalf of clients or employers in an assistant capacity. Your role may be classified as one of the following: 

• Building Surveying Technicians 

• Commercial Property Surveying Technicians 

• Residential Property Surveying Technicians 

• Land Surveying Technicians (including rural, minerals and waste management and planning and development) 

• Valuation Surveying Technicians 

• Consultant (Professional) Quantity Surveying Technicians 

• Consultant (Professional) Project Management Technicians 

This apprenticeship framework will develop your knowledge and prepare you for an Industry role or for progression onto an HNC or HND or Degree level course. 

What will I study?

Skills, knowledge and behaviours as set out in apprenticeship standard which will include six of the following units of the BTech Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment 

The Foundation Diploma consists of 9 credits from 7 units made up of the following: 

Mandatory units all completed in first year: 

- Construction Principles (double credit with exam in January first year) 
- Construction Design (double credit with exam in April/May first year) 
- Construction Technology 
- Health and Safety in Construction 

Other units to be completed in second year will typically include (some changes may be made to these units to accommodate staff specialisms and timetabling): 
 
- Building Regulations and Control in Construction 
- Provision of Primary Services 
- Building Surveying in Construction 

Additional studies will also include work on property valuation. 

How will this course be delivered?

This course will be delivered in partnership with your employer, one day in College at the Blossomfield Road Campus with the remainder of the week spent in your place of work under the direction of your employer. 

The work in College is predominantly classroom based with units such as Building Surveying taking place in part outside and there will also be some lab sessions to support learning. 

What qualifications will I get?

On completion of the apprenticeship the apprentice will have satisfied the requirements for registration as an Associate member for RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors). 

You may also gain: 

- Level 3 BTEC Foundation Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (technical certificate) 

- Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English(If required) 

How will I be assessed?

The part of your Apprenticeship that you follow at College is assessed through exams, written assignments and practical observations.  

The part of your apprenticeship which is followed in the workplace will be reviewed during regular visits by a college reviewer.  

Completion will be achieved my successfully passing the End Point Assessment with a relevant professional organisation (e.g. Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)). This will consist of a summary of experience, a case study and record of professional development. This will need to be signed by an RICS member from your workplace. In addition you will take an online ethics module provided by RICS. This module includes online learning and an online multiple choice test.

What are the entry requirements?

You must be employed as indicated above. 

You need a minimum of four GCSEs at Grade A/8 - C/4 including Mathematics, English Language and ICT or an equivalent qualification such as a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction or Engineering at Merit or Distinction Level. 

Mature students, over the age of 21, with a suitable background or experience may be accepted without formal qualifications.  If unsure please come and talk to us. Admission procedures are flexible and friendly. 

All students will be invited to interview before an offer is made. 

What else do I need to know?

This course is a part time program and you will be expected to attend 1 day per week between the hours of 9-6, timetables will be issued to successful applicants prior to induction and enrolment in September of the current Academic year.  

It is beneficial but not essential to have employment or recent employment history in the sector. 

There are no direct additional costs for this course but you may want to purchase some text books for further reading, a suggested reading list will be supplied at the beginning of your course. We have a wide selection of library books and electronic books for you to use for this course. You will be expected to supply your own stationery such as folders, paper and pens. A scientific calculator is required and a set of mathematical instruments including a protractor and compass. Connection to the internet is expected, but facilities are available at College to do this if necessary. You need to provide your own safety boots and High visibility jacket suitable for use on construction sites. You will be expected to provide your own transport to site visits but these are usually local to attend laboratory trips or local construction sites. 

Additional costs 

Costs depend on the direction and ambition of your work. We suggest budgeting approximately £250 for materials and work-books in the first year. 

What can I do after this course?

Upon completion of the apprenticeship, you can: 

- Continue with employment in the Industry 

Or 

- Progress onto a Higher Apprenticeship, HNC/HND in Building Services, or a Foundation Degree in Construction
