Hairdressing apprentices from Solihull College & University Centre have progressed to the next level despite disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Students have been working in salons for 4 days a week alongside a day at Blossomfield Campus as part of their apprenticeship. The industry has been hit hard during the pandemic and learners had to move online at points to complete their programme. They also had to work on volunteers within their bubble for the practical element. Despite the upheaval, students adapted well and battled through to completion.
Courtney Palmer, 19, currently works at The Gallery in Shirley. She comments: “College have been really supportive throughout this entire period while we were working from home. If I ever worried about anything they were there to talk me through any concerns.”
Danni McNally, 20, who works at Cudmore & Co in Solihull agrees, she adds: “Tutors did the most they possibly could to help us all through. They sent equipment out to us. We were all patient and completed cuts, colours and curls on our bubble people until training recommenced.”
Following their end point assessments, students will now mainly progress onto a Level 3 qualification which involves another year of study and are excited to return to the College’s impressive Aspire salons.
Apprenticeship Coordinator Leigh-Anne Wallis commented: “I am so proud of how our apprentices have stayed focussed and motivated especially during the pandemic. They have shown real resilience and taken everything in their stride and have proven themselves resourceful and creative with their online learning.”
