Tuesday, 23 May, 2017

Solihull College & University Centre have been awarded with £70,000 to lead on a brand new national project from the Association of Colleges (AoC), named ‘Outstanding Teaching, Learning and Assessment’ (OTLA).

The OTLA programme aims to enhance the quality of teaching, learning and assessment in post-16 education and training and will fund 15 collaborative development projects led by providers across the sector. The project brings practitioners and managers together from different providers to offer a powerful opportunity for shared learning and development. The programme will run until the end of November this year and Solihull College & University Centre will be leading on 1 of the 15 programmes, partnering with Leeds College of Building, Technician Apprentice Consortium (TAC) and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE).

The programme aims to develop a series of projects for use within the training of Civil Engineers and Building Services Engineers. These projects will be centred on current industry demands and working practices which hope to ensure that learners are exposed to dynamic and exciting learning and assessment experiences. Projects will be developed by working groups consisting of engineers from industry with specialisms in the relevant fields and teachers working with apprentices from the TAC.

The projects developed will include all of the necessary resources for the teaching, learning and assessment of specific learning outcomes relevant to the qualifications undertaken by apprentices and full-time students within these disciplines. The completed projects will then be shared with all teaching staff involved with the network of colleges and education providers at a national conference for use with their own apprentices.

In addition to the development and sharing of these projects, female apprentices will be trained to work as WISE Ambassadors to promote careers in STEM subjects to girls over 15 years of age in schools and colleges.

The College currently offers a number of STEM subjects at both its Blossomfield and Woodlands Campus and is dedicated to giving its students the best opportunities in order for them to progress within their education or within a workplace.
