A group of Health Care Assistant and Support Workers have been awarded certificates after completing their Step Up programme Level 2 Clinical Health Care Support, gaining them a nationally recognised qualification to support their roles in the Health Care industry.

Joanne McAdam, Jenny Burley, Kerry-Ann Shuck, Rebecca Horton and Patrycja Krawczyk were awarded their Step Up programme certificates last week at a presentation from the learning and development team at Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

The Step Up course is a 12 month programme gaining those on the course a Level 2 Diploma in Clinical Health Care Support and is run by Solihull College & University Centre.

The course has provided a perfect way to get back in to education and training, as well as enhancing the future career prospects of staff that completed the course.

There were six apprentices who had been employed by the Hospital on an apprenticeship programme and since completing their qualification have secured permanent positions with the trust. The other students who completed the programme have remained in employment with the trust, with some even progressing to a level 3 qualification.

Jo McAdam, a HCA from the Alexandra Hospital, Redditch gained her qualification last week said: “I thought it was the right time to get back into training, and I saw this as the perfect opportunity to further my career prospects. Because of this course, I’m going on to further training and have an interview for the new Nursing Associate programme that’s starting shortly.”

Jenny Burley a HCA from the Children’s Clinic at Worcestershire Royal Hospital said: “It’s been really good getting back in to learning and furthering myself. It’s great to get a new formal qualification that represents my job and show continued learning and development.”

Caroline Edwards, Deputy Head of Learning and Development at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals said: “It’s great to see how the learners have developed over the course of the programme and gained recognition for the skills they already possessed.

“The Step Up programmes are really worthwhile stepping stones for career development with a number of the learners gaining promotion to Band 3 positions within the organisation and/or being considered for the new Nursing Associate Band 4 programme.”

“The programmes are run in partnership with Solihull College & University Centre, the training provider and together we have just embarked on a further two programmes at Level 2 and Level 3 based on the success of this cohort.”
