Solihull student becomes youngest award winner of a technician status by the ICE
Friday, 25 November, 2016

AECOM, formerly known as AECOM Technology Corporation, is a multinational firm that provides design, consulting, construction, and management services to a wide range of clients. The company has formed a partnership with Solihull College & University Centre and hired a well skilled apprentice who has become the youngest person to be awarded a technician status by the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE).

18 year old Dominik McCormick studied towards his Civil Engineering apprenticeship at Solihull College & University Centre, choosing an apprenticeship over a full-time course. Dominik commented “I chose an apprenticeship to pursue my desired career as an engineer and to gain valuable work experience whilst still continuing to study. I am fortunate to have worked on a number of projects through to completion. I enjoy seeing my designs implemented in the real world and in use on a daily basis. My future plan is to continue my studies and become a chartered civil engineer.”

Dominik and his colleagues play a vital role with the development of our railways, roads and water, energy and waste networks, within the Midlands and worldwide. It was due to Dominik’s hard work and commitment within the civil engineering industry that he was able to attain technician status with ICE.

Steve Feeley, ICE Director of Membership Recruitment said:

“I’d like to congratulate Dominik on his fantastic achievement.  We are delighted to welcome young talented engineers and technicians qualifying with ICE, and I commend the commitment and dedication Dominik has shown to achieve this milestone early in his civil engineering career.”

Technicians usually gain this status after working within the industry for many years so Dominik has achieved something beyond his years by already being a member of ICE. This now puts him ahead of the game when progressing within the industry.

Dominik is spoken highly of by his employers, AECOM and also by the College; Steve Lintern, Apprenticeship coordinator from the College concluded:

“Dominik progressed through our level 3 apprenticeship here at the College with drive and commitment of which is a testament to his personal ambition to be a chartered engineer. He has shown to others this apprenticeship pathway tangibly changes young people’s lives in many ways that the traditional university route often doesn’t.

Dominik’s hands-on experiences within his field will be no match for a graduate following a traditional academic route and is the reason why these apprenticeships have such dynamism and why so many more young people are choosing the ‘earn and learn’ option.

We are hugely proud to have ICE’s youngest ever professional member come through our programme and of course the support from AECOM in his development has been of the highest standard.”
