College finish summer of developments for Science department
Tuesday, 6 September, 2016

Over the summer holidays Solihull College & University Centre has been busy improving its facilities ahead of the new student arrivals in September.

The College, with the assistance from the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), have enhanced their science facilities with the introduction of a number of new laboratories. The labs were built in response to the current skills gap in Life Sciences, and allow students to gain the necessary skills and qualifications to be able to find a career within the field.

Sector Skills Champion for the LEP, Tim Jones commented:

“Life Science is one of the fastest growing sectors in the Greater Birmingham area as medicine makes new breakthroughs through technologies such as genomics. To meet this growth Birmingham will need a workforce with the necessary skills and knowledge to attract companies to the area. The new state of the art lab at Solihull College will be producing the new generation of work ready applicants to meet this demand.”

The labs at the College have brand new modern equipment including touch screen monitors on all of the benches and are designed to match the high expectations of employers in the region, allowing students to develop their practical skills that are required to stand out in the job market.

The science courses at the College are available to school leavers, adult learners and those wishing to progress into higher education and gain a degree.

Students who have just received their GCSE results can begin the journey to gaining a career within the science industry at Solihull College & University Centre. Students will have the opportunity to work in these brand new labs and gain the hands on experience that many other students in the region do not have available to them.

Andrew Schneider, Head of School for Science at Solihull College & University Centre, is excited by the unique opportunities this investment will provide for science students.  “Life science is an investment priority for our region as there is a growing need for specialist skills in areas such as pathology laboratories in the NHS.  The new equipment will give our students hands on experience of using the latest technology, which will make them stand out to employers who are actively seeking to recruit new staff with specific skills.”
