Solihull College & University Centre has officially opened its Aerospace facilities at its Woodlands Campus in Smith’s Wood.

On Friday 10th June the College invited a number of guests from across the region including MP of Meriden Caroline Spelman, the Mayor of Solihull Councillor Mike Robinson and governors of Solihull College & University Centre amongst others, to the opening of the facilities.

Principal, John Callaghan along with members of staff from the College’s engineering department, welcomed guests to the opening to showcase the new facilities that the College has to offer to students within the region.

John Callaghan commented: “The College has invested over £2.5m in the aviation and aeronautical facilities at the Woodlands campus.  The investment has been supported by GBS LEP and the Rt. Hon. Caroline Spelman MP attended the VIP official opening ceremony on Friday 10th June.  We now look forward to welcoming students from across the region that will benefit from the excellent staff and facilities on offer.”

The College has recently, in partnership with the LEP, received funds to further enhance its aerospace provision by creating a large hangar which houses a former Royal Navy Bae Jetstream T Mk2 aircraft as well as the ALF502 Turbo-Fan Engines and other latest industry grade tools and test equipment. In addition to this Solihull College & University Centre has recently acquired two flight simulators, one of which is a replica from a Boeing 737-800 NG aircraft.

The new additions allow students at the College to learn in one of the country’s best Aerospace facilities. Aerospace Lecturer at Solihull College & University Centre, Salman Javed comments: “These resources reinforce the learning and understanding that takes place in the classroom. They provide our students with practical experience which will make them stand out when they approach the industry.”

Visitors on the day were not only able to see the hangar but also tested out the new aircraft simulator. The Mayor of Solihull and MP Caroline Spelman took their turn in taking off, flying and landing the aircraft with assistance from current student at Solihull College & University Centre, Luke Robinson.

MP Caroline Spelman commented: “I was delighted to be at the launch of the new aerospace facilities at Solihull College & University Centre.  It offers an exceptional opportunity for students to have a real foundation in the science and technology that is only going to become more and more important to us as we continue to push the boundaries.”

Students across all levels have already been working with the new facilities at the College and will continue to do so throughout their education at the College.
