Solihull Parents Learn Maths in Kitchen ‘Bake Off’
Monday, 29 February, 2016

Solihull parents have been brushing up their maths skills in a kitchen ‘bake-off’, as part of a free, government-funded maths course run by Solihull College & University Centre.

The ‘bake-off’, hosted by Grace Academy Solihull, formed part of a thirty-week nationally recognised City and Guilds functional maths skills course.

Ten people took part in the baking challenge, embedding maths learning in a practical way using time, measure, ratios, converting between metric and imperial measures, and communication skills.

After successfully baking her cake, Linda Harvey who has a daughter in Year 8 at Grace Academy Solihull, said:

“I am just trying to get better at maths so I can help my daughter with her homework.  Sometimes I don’t know what the answer is so I’m refreshing my memory, and some of the things we’ve been doing have been a real eye opener.

“Learning and mixing with different people has been fun.”

The course, which is being taught by Sandra White, a tutor at Solihull College & University Centre, is being held at Grace Academy and Ann White, who is also on the course, commented:

“I find it really useful, not only this course, but a lot of what Grace Academy does.  They make sure you are made very welcome, it’s very relaxed and you get tea and coffee as well.  They offer great opportunities to go on other courses and try things we wouldn’t have known about.”

Family Support Worker from Grace Academy Solihull, Maxine Bromley, added:

“I was looking for maths learning opportunities for our parents because there is such a big push on maths and English in education. When your child is learning maths and English you can realise as a parent that you are limited in your own learning, so I was looking for opportunities for parents to brush up their skills at the same place as their child.”

The course, provided by Solihull College & University Centre, is a government funded programme which gives everyone the entitlement to get a maths and English qualification.  For more information contact informationofficers@solihull.ac.uk  or telephone 0121 678 7000.
